Innovative Farmer Award: Margie Pikarsky

At this year’s conference, farmer Margie Pikarsky will receive the honor of the 2013 Florida Small Farms and Alternative Enterprises Conference “Innovative Farmer Award”. This award recognizes farmers and ranchers who are innovative leaders and excel in: making their farming systems more profitable over the long term; using farming practices that enhance, rather than harm, natural resources; leading or participating in activities that support viable communities; and providing outreach and/or education about sustainable agriculture ideas and practices to others.

Margie Pikarsky is the farmer behind Bee Heaven Farms, an organic farm located in Redland in Miami Dade County. In addition, she is the founding member of Redland Organics, an organization committed to helping local organic growers promote, produce, and market locally grown organic fruits, vegetables, and more. Pikarsky distributes her organic produce through her CSA program and maintains her farm with the help of World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) volunteers.
