SFRC Serves: Shayna Jacques

Welcome to our new Summer Blog Series, SFRC Serves. On Tuesdays and Thursdays we are sharing stories of how our students and alumni give back to their communities.

Name:

Shayna Jacques

Program:

Master’s in Ecological Restoration

Shayna Jacques is a biologist, UF graduate student, and a long time volunteer. She is the Three Lakes WMA Area’s Lead Biologist and a leader in community service, holding the title of President for her organization.

Shayna was voted in as President of The Friends of Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park after serving as the organizations treasurer for the past two years. The Friend’s group is a non-profit citizens support organization that helps protect the preserve, which holds one of the biologically richest grasslands in the world.

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve is also one of the largest remaining grasslands here in Florida and it requires the hands of many dedicated volunteers. Shayna does her part by holding fundraising events such as,” …guided wildflower and butterfly walks, interactive events that highlight the parks history and beauty, and tabling at local events.” She explains, “Our funds have helped purchase necessary items for Kissimmee Prairie that could not be bought otherwise such as water pumps for the Florida trail and a dryer for seasonal employees to use.”
