SFRC Serves: Marlyn Kallau
Welcome to our new Summer Blog Series, SFRC Serves. On Tuesdays and Thursdays we are sharing stories of how our students and alumni give back to their communities.
Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, PhD
Marlyn Kallau is a PhD student advised by Dr. Huiping Yang. Her research focuses on nutrient accumulation in microalgae and its role in mollusk aquaculture, particularly hardshell clams. Prior to joining SFRC, Marlyn was a fish nutritionist.
“As an international student, it’s nice to have a chance to volunteer,” said Marlyn. “You get the chance to interact with people outside UF.”
Her favorite time volunteering with SFRC was during an extension event in Cedar Key to promote shellfish aquaculture. “The kids were so eager to ask questions and so amazed with all the displays,” she remembered. “They often asked questions beyond your imagination!”
Marlyn plans to do more volunteer outreach in the future, especially if she gets to work with children.
