Sarasota County recognizes volunteers

UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County volunteers are recognized by Sarasota County along with other County volunteers to celebrate National Volunteer Month in April.

Of the 49 recognized volunteers selected from County departments including Human Services, Keep Sarasota County Beautiful, Libraries and Historical Resources and Parks, 10 were from UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County. All volunteers recognize were honored for helping youth throughout Sarasota County for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. Volunteers recognized from Extension included:

  • Arnold Barish,
  • Barbara Briggs,
  • Joanne Burden,
  • Julie Burnett,
  • Dennis Heidenis,
  • Carol Holmes,
  • Rick Linden,
  • Elaine Pardey,
  • Renee Pearlman, and
  • Walter Roberts.

illustrative check presented to sarasota county government to represent value of volunteer workforce in fiscal year 2019Just over 300 Extension volunteers contributed 23,270 hours of service worth $591,754 in labor to the Sarasota County volunteer program. All Sarasota County volunteers combined providing over $7.2 million in value of service over the last fiscal year.

The traditional in-person annual event for County department volunteers was limited to a speech by Commissioner Moran on April 22 in the Sarasota County Commission Chambers, to be in compliance with Governor DeSantis’s statewide “stay at home” orders due to COVID-19.

Volunteers perform a vital role in providing Extension programs and services to the residents of Sarasota County.
