EVENT: Rain Barrel Workshop celebrates 10 years

On Oct. 19, we’re celebrating 10 years of our rain barrel program, which can help you conserve water, save money by reducing the use of potable water in landscapes (lower utility bills), and protect the environment by storing and diverting runoff from impervious surfaces, like roofs.

At our free Rain Barrel Workshop that day, held at our Twin Lakes Park office, we’ll provide you with practical tips on the construction and installation of rain barrels, and share some insight into the program highlights through the years. For example, since the program’s launch, attendees have purchased nearly 3,300 barrels. If each barrel was used fully during our area’s 100-plus rain events each year, the total water savings would reach nearly 18.5 million gallons.

Additionally, we’ll raffle off a rain barrel decorated by one of our county team members, and have other interesting events and activities lined up for attendees. Register early through ufsarasotaext.eventbrite.com to reserve your spot and receive notice of any changes.

After the class, Sarasota County government will sell rain barrels for $37 each, including tax and spigot assembly. Payment must be made by cash (exact change only) or check. Make checks payable to: Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners.

For questions or further information, please call 941-861-5000 or email sarasota@ifas.ufl.edu. If you require special accommodations to attend one of our events, please contact us in advance at 941-861-5000 or sarasota@ifas.ufl.edu.

NOTE: Classes and events may be canceled at any time due to low registration or other circumstances, with full refunds issued for paid events. Similar classes or events often are offered on future dates.
