Reclaiming Your Green: A business networking event

UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County recently formed a new type of partnership, with the goals of reaching new individuals and audiences. Teaming up with local businesses Sarasota Architectural Salvage and Sarasota Green Drinks, the groups pooled resources to invite local businesses and residents for an environmentally focused businesses networking and educational happy hour event. Sarasota Architectural Salvage has been a Sarasota County Green Business Partner since 2007, and served as a perfect location to explore, discover and stimulate the imagination at this unique evening event. Using the theme of the salvage business, the event was appropriately titled, “Reclaiming your green.”

Sarasota Architectural Salvage

The program included a special presentation from local architect Michael Carlson, who introduced attendees to the Living Building Challenge. Carlson Studios has been a green business partner since 2008. Additionally, UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County staff discussed success stories and had participants join in on a discussion of sustainability issues facing businesses in Sarasota County today.

Participating partners for the evening included:

Sarasota Architectural Salvage Warehouse is a 10,000-square-foot warehouse filled with architectural salvage. Some of our mishmash items include beautiful old windows, doors and gates, unique salvaged lighting, architectural accents of all kinds, claw foot tubs and plumbing accessories, crazy and unusual outdoor garden and yard art and much, much more.

Carlson Studio Architecture houses LEED-accredited professionals who are passionate and dedicated to sustainable design, the highest quality solutions, cost control initiatives, and implementation of innovative, proven technologies.

UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County is a partnership between Sarasota County, the University of Florida and the USDA. Our mission is to translate research into community initiatives, classes, and volunteer opportunities related to our three program areas: food systems, water and environmental resources, and youth and community resource development.

Sarasota County Green Business Partnership is open to all businesses in Sarasota County, regardless of type or size. Green Business Partners make an extra effort to operate in an environmental responsible manner. More than 250 businesses have earned certification.
