4-H Summer Update

July is almost over. Coming September 1st there will be the start of a new 4-H year. Before we can say goodbye to this year, and welcome the next, there is a couple more items on our agenda to wrap out the year.
The first item of the agenda is 4-H University, previously called 4-H State Congress. Next Monday, July 28th, senior 4-H Members (Ages 14-18) will gather at the University of Florida for a week of fun adventures. This trip gives members a chance to look at the campus, meet new friends, volunteer in the local communities, compete at state level competitions, all while having a blast. This year Pinellas County has eight members going. Nicole and Samantha are attending to compete in state level competitions for Animal Industry Illustrated talks, and Jared will compete in the Share-The-Fun competition. Abby and John have been invited to put on an exhibition of their dancing during Share the Fun. Rebecca, Adison, and Kristen are going to help out with different activities and of course to have a good time. 4-H University should be a great week.
Soon after University, Pinellas County 4-H will be holding our Awards and Recognition Dinner. This dinner celebrates everyone’s hard effort to the past year with pins, certificates, and a pot luck dinner. The dinner will be held on August 15th, in the Magnolia Room at the Extension Office. Doors open at 6:00 and dinner begins at 6:30. All families and friends are welcome to attend. Just be sure to R.S.V.P., to Ms Jean or Samantha, with how many in your party and which dish you will be bring to share. This is an exciting event to look back at the past year and celebrate.

In order to start the new year on September 1st, Pinellas County 4-H puts on an annual County Congress. On Saturday August 23rd returning and new potential members are invited to the Extension Office to mingle with other clubs, look at all the different project areas, enroll in a club, and find out what it means to be a 4-H member. Also at County Congress, there will be Officer Installations, and the Ochs Garden Orientation. This is also a great opportunity to learn about some changes with Apple and Pecan fundraisers this year. Sales begin on September 1st. This is where you can ask any question you may have in order to kick start the new year.
One change to the calendar this year is the addition of the Pinellas Country Fair. Being held at the England Brother Park in Pinellas Park, the Country Fair is going to be a big blast. This event will be held from November 12th through the 16th. Ms. Jean is working very hard to get such a big event together. We are planning a rabbit, poultry, and photography show for all youth, not just 4-H’ers. I will give out more details about this event as they come.
As we bring this year to a close, and begin to plan for the new year, I have created a Calendar of Events that will be distributed soon. You can also see a calendar of dates and updates on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pinellas.fourh?fref=ts
And also on our website http://pinellas.ifas.ufl.edu/4-H/4h_calendar.shtml. We will do our best to keep everyone updated on all changes with the events. Hope you all are enjoying the summer sun!
