Upcoming citrus, tomato & vegetable gardening seminars

The UF/IFAS Extension Office in Okaloosa County will be offering a seminar on growing citrus and a seminar on growing tomatoes at the Building Industry Association of Okaloosa & Walton Counties (BIA) Home Show. And I will provide a vegetable gardening seminar on February 29 in Crestview.

On Saturday, February 22 at 2 p.m. at the BIA Home Show, Master Gardener Volunteer Linda Timothy will provide a seminar titled Let’s Grow Tomatoes. You will learn how to be successful in growing tomatoes in Northwest Florida. Topics covered during this presentation will include heirloom VS hybrid tomato varieties, container VS in ground growing as well as tomato pests.

I will provide an hour-long seminar titled Keys to Growing Citrus in North Florida the afternoon of February

22 beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the BIA Home Show. This seminar will cover which citrus types are best for our North Florida climate and how to care for your citrus trees. We will also take a look at common pests, pruning and fertilization of citrus trees.

Okaloosa County Master Gardeners will staff a booth to help answer gardening questions throughout the entire Home Show.

The Home Show will be held February 22 and 23 at the Emerald Coast Convention Center on Okaloosa Island, located at 1250 Miracle Strip Parkway SE in Fort Walton Beach.

Tickets for the BIA Home Show are on sale now at all Eglin Federal Credit Union Branch locations for only $2 in advance. Tickets at the door are $5 per person with children 12 and under admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

The 2020 Home Show hours are Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday 11a.m.–4 p.m.

On Saturday, February 29 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the UF/IFAS Extension Office, I will provide a seminar on Vegetable Gardening. This office is located at the Gerald R. Edmondson Extension Building, 3098 Airport Road in Crestview. This seminar will cover site selection, preparation, planning, soil preparation, planting and design for vegetable gardening in North Florida. I also will cover common vegetable gardening mistakes.

Cost per person for the February 29 vegetable gardening seminar is $10 payable at the door by check or cash. Preregistration is required by calling the UF/IFAS Okaloosa County Extension Office at (850) 689-5850. Space is limited.
