Thirty Youth Fire Up Grills for State Tailgate Contest Sept. 15

Who: Thirty youth members of the UF/IFAS Extension 4-H youth development program.

What: Many adults still haven’t gotten the hang of grilling on a charcoal grill. But 30 kids from across the state of Florida have mastered the art and science of cooking up delicious beef, pork, poultry and seafood. Now their skills and original recipes will be put to the test.

In addition to taste, participants are judged on their knowledge of food safety and proper grilling technique. Preparing for the contest, they’ve developed many life skills, including decision making, healthy lifestyle choices and effective communication.

The first and second place winners in each of the four divisions will receive $1,500 and $1,000 college scholarships, respectively.

This event is sponsored by Sonny’s BBQ, Winn-Dixie, National Beef and Sanderson Farms. In addition to scholarships, sponsors, who will also act as guest judges, have provided gift cards and meat thermometers.
