GAINESVILLE—Michael V. Martin, University of Florida vice president for agriculture and natural reSources, received the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award from the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) at its 80th annual meeting in Bloomington, MN. on Nov. 30.

The award was presented to Martin after he left the University of Minnesota to begin leading the statewide teaching, research and extension programs of the UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

Recipients are selected by the MFBF Board of Directors for their ability to improve Minnesota agriculture through application of new scientific technology and their leadership skills to accomplish programs and motivate others.

In presenting the award to the new UF vice president, MFBF President Al Christopherson said Martin won agricultural friends across the state for his enthusiastic and creative accomplishments as the recent dean of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota.

“The programs he has spearheaded and the high-quality people he attracted to the University of Minnesota will carry on the goals he has helped set for the university,” Christopherson said.

“This is an extreme honor,” said Martin. “Being recognized by the Farm Bureau is both humbling and a source of great pride. I will treasure this award always.”

Martin became UF Vice President for Agriculture and Natural resources on Oct. 12. He received both his B.S. and M.A. degrees at Mankato State University and his Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota in applied economics.
