Recently, Mid-Florida Research and Education Center graduate student and biological scientist Mengzi Zhang was awarded a Certificate of Outstanding Merit from the UF College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the UF International Center.

Zhang, a student in the Department of Environmental Horticulture, immigrated to the United States from China to further explore her passions for horticulture and academia, graduating from Michigan State University before becoming a Gator.

“I am very thrilled and humbled to receive this award and I am earnestly grateful for the recognition I have received for my work. I sincerely thank my advisor, Dr. Pearson, and my committee member, Dr. Chen, for supporting me with recommendation letters, as well as Dr. Hector Perez, for putting me forward on a department level. This is a great milestone and I look forward to furthering my study and research and continue to make contributions to our center, department, and institution,” Zhang said.

Congratulations, Mengzi!

Zhang’s day-to-day tasks as a student and employee include maintaining germplasm collections, which involves fertilizing, pruning (pictured) and scouting for pests.
