UF’s Citrus Labels Collection

At the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame luncheon this year, I had the pleasure to meet Mr. Jerry Chicone, a 2009 inductee. I had no idea he had previously donated his personal collection of citrus crate labels to the University of Florida a few years ago, and it was exciting to hear him tell us about it. Over 45 years, he had located and preserved examples of citrus industry commercial art, resulting in 3,000 labels from Florida in the collection as well as 122 labels from Spain. I had the opportunity to make an appointment at the Special Collections library at UF last week and to view the collection in person, and it was a magnificent sight. In fact, they are using some of the images to decorate the Great Room in Smathers Library.

You can see the digital images here of the Jerry Chicone Jr. Florida Citrus Label Collection, and search by growers, packers, lithographers, or other search terms, and download your favorite ones. Which ones do you like?
