Jackson County 4-H Member Myra Miles Competes at 4-H Chick Show and Auction

Jackson County Country Bumpkins 4-H Club member Myra Miles.

Congratulations to Myra Miles, member of the Jackson County 4-H Country Bumpkins 4-H Club for representing our county in the 4-H Chick Chain Show and Auction held Saturday, October 3, 2015 in Ozark, Alabama. This was the culminating event in the pilot 4-H program that was launched earlier this year between Alabama and Florida 4-H. Six panhandle counties partnered to help pilot this educational program. Of the seven Jackson County youth originally registered to compete in the 4-H Chick Chain, Myra was the only youth to actually complete the project by competing at the show.

Myra received 1st place in her age division for her record book and well as 1st place for Jackson County. There were 10 contestants in her showmanship competition and Myra received 5th place. Myra’s pen of three hens took Grand Champion for Jackson County and her hens were auctioned off for $45.00.

When asked about her experience with the 4-H Chick Chain Project Myra had this to say, “I started with 18 chicks that were supposed to all be pullets that I received when they were one day old. Once they were old enough I moved them to my outside pen. One died of unknown causes, three escaped, and one turned out to be a rooster. I was able to show and sell three hens, and I have 10 left. I learned a lot by participating in this project, including learning about bio-security. It was hard work but it was worth it. I would like to do it again next year.”

Jackson County 4-H plans to offer this program again next spring and we encourage all youth to consider joining us!
