Jackson County 4-H Embryology Program is Something to Crow About!

The introduction of the 4-H Embryology Program has been a huge success in Jackson County!

We are pleased to announce that we have been able to offer this wonderful program to 60 Jackson County youth from Dayspring Christian Academy and Malone School. All 60 youth and their teachers received Certificates of Completion for their participation in the Jackson County 4-H Embryology Program. We have classrooms on a waiting list to participate! This program was made possible in part due to start-up funds from a Florida 4-H Agricultural Awareness Mini Grant, the UF/IFAS 4-H Embryology Program, and donations from the Marianna Tractor Supply Company store. We are excited about expanding this program once more funding is secured.

Students participating in this program were guided through 4-H curriculum designed to teach them about science and respect for life. Students hatched chicks in the classroom and witnessed the exciting miracle of life, and took the responsibility of caring for the fertilized eggs and then the chicks after they hatched. Students journaled each day to record their thoughts and observations. They also earned points to use toward a chance to take chicks home!

A brooder is on display at the UF/IFAS Jackson County Extension office at 2741 Pennsylvania Ave., Suite 3, Marianna, FL and will have chicks on display throughout the summer. We are currently waiting for our next batch to hatch sometime next week so be sure to come and visit us!
