Save the Date! GI-BMP Workshop Opportunity

Save the Date: GI-BMP Workshop Opportunity

By Christine Kelly-Begazo, Indian River County Agriculture Extension Agent

On Friday, November 2, 2018 there will be a workshop for assisting landscape workers in obtaining their Limited Certification Urban Landscape Commercial Fertilizer License. If you are a commercial landscape worker and apply any fertilizer to a property for pay, then you are required to have this license. This workshop will provide you with the mandated training and exam, which will be taken the same day immediately following the workshop.

The workshop will begin at 8:15am with an introduction and a pretest that runs until 9am. After the pretest, the training will begin with an overview and history of the BMP program and local ordinances, as well as how to use BMP’s to protect water quality. After a short break, the next topic will be the use of IPM in a management program. This will include pesticide selection, storage, handling and disposal. Moving forward, attendees will then be trained in irrigation requirements, design, installation, monitoring, troubleshooting and proper management of irrigation. Lunch will be served around 12:30pm before moving on to the next lesson in lawn and landscape, cultural and fertilization BMP’s. This includes mowing, pruning, fertilization and irrigation effects on plant health and ability to tolerate pest pressures. Lastly, there will be an overview of fertilizer sources and comparisons to plant growth responses. After a 15-minute review, the post test will be distributed at approximately 3:00pm and will be followed by evaluations and CEU’s. Follow the guidelines ahead to make sure you don’t miss anything, and remember you can pre-obtain study material for the exam by contacting your local county extension office or at http://fyn.ifas.ufl.edu/professionals/BMP_class_agenda.htm .
