Fellsmere has a long history of agriculture in Florida. Named for New Zealander E. Nelson Fell who purchased 118,000 acres of land and established the Fellsmere Farms Company in 1911.  Incorporated in 1915, Fellsmere had two hotels, paved streets and sidewalks, a railroad, over 250 miles of drainage canals and an electric company. The historic Old School building was completed in 1916. Fell promoted the rich soils to investors for citrus groves and winter vegetables. In the 1930’s production was primarily sugar cane with locally grown sugar refined and sold as “Florida Crystals.”
