Education in Action

UF/IFAS and Eckerd CONNECTS Workforce Division has partnered to pilot the Making It On Your Own curriculum, developed by Dr. Randy Cantrell, Scott Taylor, Shelby Ball, LuAnn Duncan, Jana Griffin, Dr. Brenda Williams, Melanie Thomas, and Charna Cohn. The partnership was formed because the curriculum addresses a subject area that cannot be over emphasized in the workforce preparation programs: housing and how to obtain a lease in the residential marketplace, and training and preparation for how to ‘make it on your own.’ The participants typically do not have the type of credit score required to qualify for placement in a corporate-owned apartment complex upon completing the Eckerd programs. Thus, by including the Making It On Your Own curriculum, students will earn a certificate of completion from UF IFAS as well as retain a professional-looking workbook of interactive exercises they completed during the training, which they can present to a potential property manager along with their certificate in support of the knowledge they have gained.
