MILKWEED GUEST LECTURE

The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve is hosting a free guest lecture about monarch butterflies and milkweed plants on Wednesday, Nov. 16 in the Nature Center. Scott Davis, a park ranger at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, will talk about the relationship between local milkweed and monarch populations, as well as the upcoming monarch migration and how you can landscape your yard to attract them.
Milkweed is a very important plant for the butterfly, as it is the only plant that serves as a food source for the monarch caterpillar. Additionally, the St. Marks Refuge has developed a Monarch-Milkweed Initiative, in which they are breeding many species of milkweed to help bring back a healthy monarch population.
