4-H Civic Leadership Program 2016

There are some wonderful opportunities coming up in the 4-H leadership program this spring and summer. All of these are centered on civic education, which includes teaching youth about the democratic process, debate, public speaking, service learning, and social awareness and responsibility.

Please note the age that is appropriate for each program.

Legislature Training and Civic Education Series (youth age 13-18)

Any youth may attend, however this series is mandatory for youth applying for a scholarship to 4-H State Legislature.

I’m Just a Bill – April 19, 5-7, Langley Bell 4-H Center – Youth will learn about how bills become law, the process of parliamentary procedure, and how the democratic process functions in the United States.

Get Out on the Floor – May 19, 5-7, Langley Bell 4-H Center – Youth will learn the process of debate from constructing pro and con arguments, how to do good research, how to analyze legislation, and to how to present an argument.

Welcome to the Big Show – (time and location TBA, anticipated week of June 13 at ECUA) – Youth will put their new skills to use as we conduct a mock legislative meeting, debating and amending bills and role playing as lobbyists, representatives, and senators in our own version of the Florida Legislature.

4-H State Legislature (For youth age 13-18 as of Sept. 1, 2015)

July 27-July 1, Tallahassee, FL –This week long intensive program takes place in the State’s capitol where youth from across the state gather to participate in a mock Legislative session, right in the capitol’s legislative chambers. Find out more at http://florida4h.org/programsandevents_/leg/. Scholarships available from Escambia County 4-H. Contact our office for more information.

Escambia County 4-H Mock Intermediate Legislature (For youth age 9-13)

August 2-3, 8-2 each day, Langley Bell 4-H Center – In a two day series, these day camps will offer our Intermediate youth a chance to be see what the civic leadership program is all about. Senior 4-H youth who have participated in the Legislative Training and Civic Education Series and/or attended 4-H Legislature will help lead and mentor youth in their own version of the series, with training and preparation along with their own mock legislative session on the 3rd. The camp is $5 each day. Register with the 4-H office as space will be limited.

Youth can attend any or all of the workshops that they qualify to attend, but coming to all the events appropriate for the youth’s age would maximize youth’s learning. Programs will work in conjunction with one another, however you do not need to attend every program in order to benefit from it.
