Arbor Day Workshop and Tree Giveaway a Success!
Despite the decidedly non-Florida weather outside, over 100 Escambia County residents braved the sleet and snow to attend today’s Arbor Day tree workshop and giveaway at the newly renovated Molino Community Center. Educational talks, led by Escambia Extension Agents Libbie Johnson, Beth Bolles, and Carrie Stevenson, focused on proper tree planting techniques, mulching, and irrigation. The short seminars ran every 10 minutes and were given before attendees selected their plants. County arborist Jimmie Jarratt and Engineering staff member Shauna Jones
discussed proper tree pruning techniques and stormwater runoff pollution with participants waiting for the next scheduled talk. Master Gardener volunteers assisted with selection of trees, which included one-gallon mayhaw and willow oaks.
We have several dozen trees leftover from the program, so if you are interested in picking up a tree please contact the Extension office at 850-475-5230.
In one week, UF IFAS Extension will partner with the City of Pensacola to hold an Arbor Day celebration at Malaga Square, a city park at the corner of 10th Avenue and Blount Street. Students from N.B. Cook Elementary will install an educational sign at the base of a large live oak tree highlighting the environmental and economic benefits of the tree. Funding for the signage was provided by International Paper. Be on the lookout for more of these signs at a city park or street near you!
