Turn your New Year’s Resolutions into Realistic Solutions for Better Health

Unfortunately, many of us make New Year’s resolutions that are unrealistic, unattainable, and leave us feeling overwhelmed. Having realistic goals that provide solutions to a healthier and happier life and ones that we can stick to are key to success.

These five tips from ChooseMyPlate.gov can help you accomplish our goals and provide solutions to make them part of your everyday life.

1. Start with small changes

Instead of a diet overhaul, make small changes to what you eat and drink that will work for you now and in the future. Take the time to slow down and pay attention to your food. It’s easier to notice when you feel full. Your small change may be decreasing your portion size or increasing the amount of water you drink.

2. Take one day at a time

Sometimes things don’t go as planned, even with the best of intentions. If you miss one day or one milestone for your goal, don’t give up!

3. Be active your way

30 minutes of physical activity is recommended every day. Pick activities you enjoy! If you focus on having fun or learning a new skill that interests you, you will be more likely to stick with it. Also remember you don’t have to do all 30 minutes at one time. If you have a busy schedule break it up into three 10-minute activity breaks.

4. Team up

Find a friend with similar goals—swap healthy recipes and be active together. Staying on track is easier with support and a cheerleader. Use an app such as My Fitness Pal where you can monitor each other’s activity and success.

5. Celebrate successes

Think of each change as a “win” as you build positive habits and find ways to reach your goals. Reward yourself−you’ve earned it!
