Herd Manager- Willard Sparks Beef Cattle Research Center

The Willard Sparks Beef Cattle Research Center Herd Manager will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the research and teaching feedlot at Oklahoma State University in cooperation with the faculty supervisor and the graduate student research coordinator. Duties include: maintaining and supervising a staff of undergraduate student employees; coordinating cattle feeding, processing, treatment and well-being; working with the research coordinator to facilitate research activities; maintaining inventories of cattle, feed, and pharmaceutical products; documentation and reporting of research data (as needed) and animal protocols (including IACUC); maintaining communication with faculty, students, and other appropriate personnel; assist with oversight of the Insentec feed and water intake facility located at the feedlot; collaboration with faculty, students, and administration for successful completion of research projects and teaching activities.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or related field in Agriculture

•Must be organized and able to maintain feeding records, written protocols, and research records, including Animal Care and Use Protocols and CAFO records
•At least 1 year related work experience, proficient in managing, handling, and processing confined cattle, and willing to follow recommended guidelines to ensure the health and well-being of all of the animals in the feed yard.
•Valid Driver’s License, BQA, IACUC, and OHSP training/certification or completion of all required training within 30 days of employment
•Must be able to manage employees effectively. Must be willing to work with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, veterinarians and administration; and be focused on effective communication and fostering teamwork among all parties
•BQA, IACUC, and OHSP trained/certified, or willingness to become certified
•Must have maintenance and mechanical skills (including arc welding skills) sufficient to perform general repairs to equipment and facilities
•Must be computer literate (willing/able to communicate via e-mail, office phone, and mobile phone as well as operate MS Office programs competently)
•Ability to oversee the safety of all employees and students at the facility
Salary Range: $14.31 – $21.46/hour, paid biweekly

Date Position is Available: October 1, 2018, or as soon thereafter as an outstanding candidate is
available. Continuation of this position is subject to performance and need.
