POSITION:                Livestock Operations Manager – St. Paul Campus and Rosemount

About the Unit and Position
The St. Paul campus is home to a dairy herd (100 cows) and a livestock teaching herd comprised of swine (30 sows and piglets), sheep (40 ewes and lambs) and beef (20 steers) animals.  Rosemount Research and Outreach Center (RROC) is home to turkey (3,000 birds) and beef (a total of 350 feedlot cattle and cow-calf pairs) animal units.  Herds are designed to support the Department of Animal Science (DAS) teaching, research and extension missions.    
The primary purpose of this position is to oversee operations and safety for DAS animal units, including responsibility to train and supervise personnel (farm animal attendants, staff and students); develop, implement and maintain safety protocols and first aid training; negotiate and maintain feed inventories; negotiate and manage equipment uses; and develop and track unit budgets.  The Livestock Operations Manager collaborates and coordinates with faculty managers and livestock unit managers and reports to the Animal Science Department Head. 
Major Responsibilities include:
Operations – St. Paul Campus (50%)
  • Coordinate with unit managers to maintain and negotiate feed supplies and coordinate ordering and storage of feeds for units on the St. Paul Campus and at Rosemount.
  • Assist in purchasing, leasing, and maintaining equipment for all units and scheduling equipment shared among units.   
  • Coordinate with Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station Ag Services to manage manure and other waste from units.
  • Develop operating budgets and work with DAS Head, CFANS administration, and faculty supervisors to ensure animal units are fiscally solvent.
  • Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) on IACUC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the St. Paul Dairy and Livestock Teaching Barns; ensure these SOPs are IACUC approved and displayed; serve as study personnel on IACUC protocols for use of animals in all units. 
·         Along with unit managers, develop operational protocols and oversee cleaning, maintenance and repair of facilities, equipment and tools at the St. Paul Dairy and Livestock Teaching Barns. 
·         Monitor animal facilities to ensure regulatory compliance with University requirements.
·         Communicate and interact with faculty, students, veterinarians, other university personnel, and the general public.
  • Report and be accountable to the DAS Head on all aspects (budgets, animal usage certification/documentation and animal unit personnel) of animal operations and usage on the St. Paul Campus and Rosemount facilities
Safety – St. Paul Campus and Rosemount Research and Outreach Center (25%)
·         Ensure employees obtain required and ongoing occupational health, first aid, safety, and care and use of animal training (IACUC), and stay current with university requirements.  
·         Ensure that a written set of standard operating procedures (SOP) and safety procedures for all jobs in each animal unit is developed and maintained.
·         Coordinate with unit managers to ensure that established SOP and good management practices (GMP) are followed by all employees.
Personnel – St. Paul Campus (15%)
  • Supervise and schedule labor personnel in the Livestock Teaching Barns to accomplish quality care and health maintenance of animals.
  • Coordinate with St. Paul Dairy Barn Manager and faculty managers to ensure labor is used efficiently across the Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Facility (Dairy Barn) and Teaching Barns. 
  • Coordinate with all unit managers and faculty managers to ensure on-boarding, annual reviews and frequent feedback for Farm Animal Attendants and graduate and undergraduate student workers are completed.   
Animal Care and Management – St. Paul Campus (10%)
·         Ensure maintenance of electronic herd health records for dairy, beef, sheep, and swine herds and review herd health programs with unit managers.
·         Routinely observe dairy, beef, sheep, and swine herds on the St. Paul Campus and poultry and beef at Rosemount for general well-being, health, and behavior.
Other duties related to dairy, livestock, and poultry operations as assigned by the Department Head.
Required qualifications
·         Four (4) year degree (BS) with specialization in dairy, poultry or animal science, veterinary science or related field.
·         Minimum of six (6) years of experience in a livestock or poultry research facility, or 6 years of experience in farm animal management.
·         Alternatively, a MS degree with a minimum of 4 years of experience.
·         Experience or skills related to livestock research (research or other protocol compliance, data collection, reporting, effective interaction with researchers and students).
·         Demonstrated record-keeping skills.
·         Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
·         Ability to interact well with people from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Supervisory and management experience.
  • Business administration and accounting experience.
·         Familiarity with diverse production animal species.
·         Experience in dairy farm management
