Starting a Farm in Alachua County – General resources for prospective and beginning farmers

When doing your research on your new farm or on sections of your business plan, you will find plenty of websites and it can be overwhelming. Where to start? What websites are reliable?

To keep it simple but efficient, I compiled a brief list of websites from trustworthy sources.

Comprehensive resources:
  1. https://smallfarm.ifas.ufl.edu/
  2. https://newfarmers.usda.gov/
  3. https://www.sare.org/learning-center/Beginning-Farmers

One of the main materials used in our workshops is a publication from Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) titled “Building a Sustainable Business”. You can purchase this book or download a free PDF file to organize your business plan as you develop it.

Budgets for agricultural enterprises
  1. https://svaec.ifas.ufl.edu/extension-programs/agricultural-economics/north-florida-enterprise-budgets/
  2. https://fred.ifas.ufl.edu/extension/commodity-production-budgets/
  3. https://agecon.uga.edu/extension/budgets.html
Marketing
  1. https://attra.ncat.org/marketing/
  2. http://ifasbooks.ifas.ufl.edu/p-1455-florida-direct-marketing-handbook.aspx – Developed by UF/IFAS

If you have used other online or printed resources that have worked well for you, please share your comments or send me an email at tatiana.sanchez@ufl.edu.
